NICKEL METAL HYDRIDE (Ni-MH) BATTERIES

Developed to meet the requirement for increasingly higher levels of energy demanded by today’s electronic products, Nickel Metal Hydride batteries can offer up to three times the capacity of the same size standard Nickel Cadmium batteries and do not suffer from memory effects. Due to their increased capacity and energy density features, users can expect a longer time between charges and longer running time. They are available in both cylindrical and prismatic shapes.

Advantages

Energy density

Ni-MH cells offer 30-40% higher energy density compared to Ni-Cd cells

Lower memory effect

Less prone to memory effect than the Ni-Cd. Periodic exercise cycles are required less often

Environmentally friendly

No cadmium mercury or lead. Contains only mild toxins and profitable for recycling

Storage and transportation

Transport is not subject to regulatory control


Limitations

High self-discharge

The Ni-MH has about 50 percent higher self-discharge compared to the Ni-Cd. But nearly ten times worse than lead acid or Lithium batteries

Limited Life Cycle

The performance starts to deteriorate after 200-300 cycles if repeatedly deeply cycled

High maintenance

Battery requires regular full discharge to prevent crystalline formation. Ni-MH should be exercised every 3 months

Expensive

About 20 percent more expensive than Ni-Cd
